The Lyricism of Matter. Jules Romains and the French Avant-garde

Romains’ musical forms were aimed at ending the isolation of the subject by joining the flux of collectivity and a space, which would otherwise remain outside the musical forms. Futurism (and Futurist painting and music) absorbed the message quasi-philologically. As in an ideal dialectic, the Surrealists made it their business to resume (and indeed reinforce) the division between the individual and space, to the extent of making the subject an empty, intermittent form, a tributary of matter which is able to flow in from the outside. This last event is not to be considered the resuming of an individual-space continuity but simply a reducing of the individual to an intermittent presence; the passive victim of a flux of matter passing through them as they traverse space. The fluxes of matter establish no links among men, but limit themselves to restoring to the individual a temporary concreteness, a temporary isolation, straining the continuity of social relations and the very existence of “collective” forces.

Le "forme" della musica nella poesia di J. Romains vorrebbero porre fine all'isolamento del soggetto nella società contemporanea, reinserendolo nel flusso della collettività. Il futurismo (e la pittura e la musica futuriste) accolsero l'esperienza precorritrice di Romains. Come in una dialettica ideale, i surrealisti hanno poi ripreso (e in effetti rafforzato) l'estraneità di l'individuo e spazio, fino a rendere il soggetto una forma vuota, intermittente, dentro cui affluisce una materia esterna. I flussi di materia non stabiliscono legami tra gli uomini, ma si limitano a restituire all'individuo una concretezza temporanea, un isolamento temporaneo, che mette a dura prova la continuità delle relazioni sociali e l'esistenza stessa delle forze "collettive".
